Defiant from the dock, Breivik boasts more will die

Extremist's claim that there are two more cells in network prompts international investigation

The rightwing extremist who confessed to the mass killings in Norway boasted in court on Monday that there were two more cells from his terror network still at large, prompting an international investigation for collaborators.

After Anders Behring Breivik pleaded not guilty, despite admitting that he had carried out the attacks in Oslo and on Utøya island, officials said it was possible he had not acted alone.

Prosecutor Christian Hatlo said Breivik had been calm in court and "seemed unaffected by what has happened", adding that the suspect had told investigators during his interrogation that he never expected to be released.

"We can't quite rule out that someone else was involved. This is partly based on the information that there are two other cells," Hatlo said.

The prosecutor said he could not discuss whether Breivik had organised the cells or whether he was working alongside them. Police have said they have no other suspects at present.

It also emerged on Monday that Norway's police security service had been alerted to a suspicious chemical purchase by Breivik in March, but had decided not to investigate further.

Police also lowered the previously announced death toll, saying 68 people died on Utøya, not 86 as previously stated. Eight died in the bomb attack in Oslo, taking the total number of fatalities to 76.

Breivik's plan to use the courtroom to create a global platform for his Islamophobic message failed when the judge, Kim Heger, ordered that the arraignment be held in camera. Prosecutors said the hearing was held behind closed doors because of security concerns, heightened after Breivik cited the possible existence of a wider group of far-right backers.

Breivik was remanded in custody for eight weeks, with the first four to be in solitary confinement – meaning he will be allowed no visitors other than his lawyer, and will have no access to newspapers, other media, or letters. Police said a trial may not take place for up to one year.

Breivik's organisation, which he claimed to have founded in London nine years ago, is supposedly a reconstituted version of the medieval Knights Templar.

Experts and intelligence agencies have voiced concern over the threat from pan-European rightwing terror groups since Breivik's attacks last Friday.

Breivik was said to have been placed on an intelligence watch list in March after apparently buying chemical fertiliser from a Polish company. Janne Kristiansen, the chief of Norway's police security service, told national broadcaster NRK that the purchase had set off an alert because the company was under scrutiny. But since the transaction was legal, security police did not have a reason to investigate further.

It was reported that Breivik was with a second person when he also tried to buy fertiliser earlier this year.

Breivik was said to have told police that he intended to "hit" Gro Harlem Brundtland, a former Norwegian prime minister and Labour party leader, who visited Utøya hours before the attack.

A spokesman for Brundtland said she had been on the island until 3pm on Friday, attending the ruling Labour party's youth camp, and left before the shooting started. Breivik said he had been delayed reaching the island but did not say why, police said. In his self-proclaimed "manifesto", Breivik accused Labour of threatening Norwegian culture by allowing the "mass import of Muslims".

Norway continued to mourn its dead on Monday night with 100,000 people gathering in the capital for a march and vigil led by the prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg. Other rallies were held around the country.

A vehicle carrying Breivik to the court hearing was beaten by angry onlookers who jeered and shouted abuse.

The revulsion was shared by Breivik's estranged father. "I don't feel like his father," said Jens David Breivik, who lives in France. "How could he just stand there and kill so many innocent people and just seem to think that what he did was OK? He should have taken his own life, too. That's what he should have done," he told Sweden's Expressen newspaper.

Breivik's "manifesto", entitled a European declaration of independence, was posted on the internet hours before the attacks. In it, he said he would use his arrest to mount a media blitz to publicise his cause. If he survived the attacks and was captured, that would "mark the initiation of the propaganda phase", he wrote.

Breivik's lawyer, Geir Lippedstad, said: "He has been politically active and found out himself that he did not succeed with usual political tools and so resorted to violence."

Hatlo, the prosecutor, said Breivik was calm and "seemed unaffected by what has happened".

The prospect of an enduring threat linked to Breivik was one of many revelations following the 32-year-old's court appearance in which he said his motive for the attacks was to save Europe from a Muslim takeover.

Criticism of the police response grew on Monday as survivors from Utøya told of their wait for help. Police swat teams took an hour to get to Utøya after the first alert was issued, hampered in part by a lack of helicopters. It emerged that a boat heading for Utøya had to turn back after it began to take on water due to its heavy load of police officers and equipment.

Anders Behring Breivik

Biography

Breivik was born in London, on 13 February 1979,[26][27] the son of Wenche Behring, a nurse, and Jens David Breivik, a Siviløkonom (Norwegian professional title, literally "civil economist"), who worked as a diplomat for the Royal Norwegian Embassy in London and later Paris.[28] He spent the first year of his life in London until his parents divorced when he was one year old. His father, who later married a diplomat, fought for his custody but failed. Breivik lived with his mother and his half sister in the west-end of Oslo and regularly visited his father and stepmother in France, until they divorced when he was 12. His mother also remarried, to a Norwegian army officer.[29]

Breivik attended Smestad Grammar School, Ris Junior High, Hartvig Nissen High School and Oslo Commerce School.[30] A former classmate has recalled that he was an intelligent student who often took care of people who were bullied.[31] When he reached adolescence, Breivik's behaviour became more rebellious and wayward. He and his gang of friends would reportedly spend their evenings hanging around in Oslo, spraying tags and graffiti on buildings. He later wrote that after he was caught spraying graffiti on walls, his father stopped contact with him.[30]

Breivik criticised both of his parents for supporting the policies of the Norwegian Labour Party, and his mother for being a moderate feminist. He wrote about his upbringing: "I do not approve of the super-liberal, matriarchal upbringing as it completely lacked discipline and has contributed to feminising me to a certain degree."

Breivik's father, who currently lives in France as a pensioner, has confirmed that he has had no contact with his son since 1995.[32] His home in the south of France was surrounded by gendarmes following the murders.[33][34] They initially said they were searching the premises,[35] but later the state prosecutor at Carcassonne said that the gendarmes were to protect Breivik and his wife.[30] The local mayor's office said Breivik had requested protection against harassment from journalists.[36] After the attack, Jens Breivik is quoted as saying "I don't feel like his father", and "How could he just stand there and kill so many innocent people and just seem to think that what he did was OK? He should have taken his own life, too. That's what he should have done", adding "I will have to live with this shame for the rest of my life."[35] Breivik's mother has reportedly left her home after her son's arrest and is staying at a secret location.[37]

Breivik was exempt from conscription in the Norwegian Army and has no military training.[38] In his manifesto, Breivik described how he avoided his mandatory military service in the Norwegian Army three times, by claiming he would not put his life on the line for Norway’s political parties.

For some time Breivik worked in a customer service company.[39] A former co-worker has described him as an "exceptional colleague",[40] while a close friend of his stated that he usually had a big ego and would be easily irritated by those of Middle Eastern or South Asian origin.[41] Breivik claims that he started a nine-year-plan to finance the attack in 2002, founding his own "computer programming" business while working at the customer service company. He claims that his company grew to six employees and "several offshore bank accounts", and that he made his first million at the age of 24.[42] The company was later declared bankrupt and Breivik was reported for several breaches of the law.[43] To save money, he moved back to his mother's home. His declared fortune in 2007 was about 630,000 Norwegian krones, according to Norwegian tax authority figures.[39] He claims that by 2008 he had about two million Norwegian krones and nine credit cards giving him access to €26,000 in credit.[42]

In May 2009 he founded a farming company under the name "Breivik Geofarm",[44] described as a farming sole proprietorship set up to cultivate vegetables, melons, roots and tubers.[27] In the same year he visited Prague in an attempt to buy illegal weapons. The attempt was a failure, and Breivik decided to obtain weapons through legal channels instead.[45] He had no declared income in 2009 and his fortune amounted to 390,000 Norwegian krones, according to Norwegian tax authority figures.[39] In January 2010 he states that his funds are "depleting gradually". On 23 June 2011, a month before the attacks, he paid the outstanding amount on his nine credit cards in order to have access to funds while he continued his preparations.[42] In late June or early July 2011, he moved to a rural area south of Åsta in Åmot, Hedmark county, about 140 km (86 miles) northeast of Oslo,[46]the site of his farm. Immediately after the attack there was speculation that he could have used the company as a cover to legally obtain large amounts of artificial fertiliser and other chemicals for the manufacturing of explosives.[46] A farming supplier sold Breivik's company six tonnes of fertiliser in May.[47] Newspaper Verdens Gang reported that after Breivik bought large amounts of fertiliser from an online shop in Poland, his name was among 60 passed to the Police Security Service (PST) by Norwegian Customs as having used the store to buy products. Speaking to the newspaper, Jon Fitje of PST said the information they found gave no indication of anything suspicious. Despite this, the security service accessed his phone and email but only for 24 hours. In his manifesto Breivik described his first experiments with the fertiliser nitrate explosives before detailing a successful test detonation at a remote location on 13 June 2011.[48] He sets the cost of the preparations for the attacks at 317,000 euros - "130,000 out of pocket and 187,500 euros in lost revenue over three years."[39]

Anders Behring Breivik: YouTube Video

I think it's clear that Anders Behring Breivik planned to be famous.

It's as if he wanted all the details of his barbaric attacks to be documented and available to people in preparation for Breivik: The Movie.

Breivik didn't just have notebooks filled with his scrawling. He posted his deranged plans on the Internet. He released a video on YouTube.

Watch the 12-minute video:

The video, which promotes fighting against Islam, shows Anders Behring Breivik wearing a wetsuit and holding an automatic weapon.

The pictures appear at the end of the video called "Knights Templar 2083".

From the Wall Street Journal:
A couple of hours before the devastating bomb blast in Norway's capital, terror suspect Anders Behring Breivik released a video on YouTube where he calls for conservatives to "embrace martyrdom."

TV2 said sources within Norway's police confirmed the video was uploaded by Mr. Breivik, who was charged Saturday for the bombing and shootings in Norway's capital and a nearby island Friday that left at least 92 people dead.

The video was uploaded by a user called AndrewBerwick on YouTube, hours before the bomb in the centre of Oslo went off, TV2 said. It calls for conservatives to "embrace martyrdom."

"[If] the multiculturalist elites of Europe continue to refuse to voluntarily transfer political and military power to our conservative revolutionary forces ... then [the second world war] is likely going to appear as a picnic compared to the coming carnage," the video stated in captions.

Signed also by an AndrewBerwick, an English translation of the name Anders Breivik, was a manifest called "2083 - A European Declaration of Independence" on the site www.freak.no. The manifest is 1,500 page description on Mr. Breivik's background and political viewpoints.

Breivik seems like an Osama bin Laden wannabe, "embrace martyrdom."

So why didn't Breivik take his own life?

He wants to witness the attention being heaped on him. He's a star.

Sky News has some excerpts from Breivik's 1,500-page manifesto
.
A 1,500 page document has appeared on the internet which is believed to be written by 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik.

It describes his mindset and preparations in the 95 days before the attack and claims he has been planning the acts since 2009.

The gunman's document reveals his dislike for what he sees as a growing influence of muslims in Europe.

It reads: Wednesday May 4 - Day 3: Finished creating the metal skeletons for the blast devices and completing other practical issues relating to gear and equipment.

Saturday June 11 - Day 41 I prayed for the first time in a very long time today. I explained to God that unless he wanted the Marxist-Islamic alliance and certain Islamic Takeover of Europe...he must ensure that the warriors fighting for the preservation of European Christendom prevail.

Friday July 22 - Day 82: Initiate blasting sequences at pre-determined sites... have enough material for 20 blasts... I believe this will be my last entry. It is now Friday July 22nd 12.51pm.

He says that being arrested was part of his plan - he wants notoriety.

Defence lawyer Geir Lippestad told Norway's NRK television channel that Breivik had "admitted responsibility" and "confessed to the factual circumstances".

"He explained that it was cruel but that he had to go through with these acts," Mr Lippestad said, adding the carnage was "long planned".

Breivik is getting exactly what he wants - fame.

It's as if he's proud of the slaughter.

Is Breivik mentally ill or is he pure evil?

Anders Behring Breivik

Anders Behring Breivik has been arrested in the deadly Norway attacks.

He's reportedly a "Christian fundamentalist with right-wing tendencies."

Good news for the liberal media!

From Bloomberg:

A 32-year-old Norwegian man was arrested on the island of Utoeya, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Oslo, and authorities have begun interrogating the suspect, police said at a press briefing today. The same person is likely behind the bombing and the shootings on the island, they said. The suspect’s name is Anders Behring Breivik, local media reported. Police declined to confirm the suspect’s name.

The man has been charged on two counts of “dangerous crime to society,” which means he could be sentenced to 21 years in prison, Norway’s toughest punishment, Roger Andresen, deputy Oslo police chief, told reporters today. The man is a Christian fundamentalist with right-wing tendencies, Andresen said.

From the Telegraph:

The blond-haired 32-year-old appears to have set up accounts on the social networking sites Facebook and Twitter just a few days ago.

Although police have not officially named Breivik as the suspect, Norwegian media identified him as the gunman. Police say the suspect is talking to police and was keen to "explain himself".

Eyewitness reports from the island of Utoya, where the shootings took place, have also described a tall, blond haired, blue-eyed Norwegian man dressed as a police officer.

On the Facebook page attributed to him, Mr Breivik describes himself as a Christian and a conservative. It listed his interests as hunting, body building and freemasonry. His profile also listed him as single. The page has since been taken down.

Police chief Svinung Sponheim said that internet posting by Breivik suggested he has "some political traits directed toward the right, and anti-Muslim views".

Blond, blue eyes, Right-winger, with anti-Muslim views - Breivik is a dream come true for the lib media!

It just doesn't get better than this!

...The Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang quoted a friend as saying that the suspect turned to right-wing extremism when in his late 20s. The newspaper also said that he participated in online forums expressing strong nationalistic views.

A Twitter account attributed to the suspect has also emerged but it only has one post, which is a quote from the philosopher John Stuart Mill: "One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests."

More, from the New York Daily News:

The killer behind Friday's bloodletting in Norway is a boyishly handsome, blond-haired anti-Islamic nationalist interested in politics, violent video games and the T.V. show "Dexter."

Anders Behring Breivik, a 32-year-old Norwegian national, claims to be a fan of Winston Churchill, classical music, and gory movies like, "300," and "Gladiator," on his Facebook page.

He also claims on the page to be a fan of the sappy HBO vampire drama, "True Blood," and the serial killer show, "Dexter."

Breivik, who was reportedly a Free Mason at one time, has been fingered for the dual attacks that claimed more than 7 lives in the capitol of Oslo, and 80 campers on the island youth retreat of Utoya.

...The shooter belongs to "right-wing circles" in Oslo, the city in which he resides, according to Norwegian TV2. Meanwhile, The Huffington Post cites the Swedish news site Expressen as saying that he is a "self-described nationalist who has also written a number of posts critical of Islam."

He studied at the Oslo Commerce School, an instituion devoted to business and financial management.

In published photos, the alleged killer is shown to don a half smile, preppy clothing, and piercing green eyes that stare into the camera.

...On his Facebook page, Breivik describes himself as a fan of shoot-em'-up video games like "Modern Warefare 2," as well as the fantasy epic, "World of Warcraft."

Perfect!

As more is learned about Breivik and his background, do you think American leaders and officials will bend over backwards to insist that Breivik's horrific rampage is not to be taken as a reflection on Christian fundamentalists or those with conservative views?

Will they warn against a backlash against conservatives?

Will their concern be with people lashing out violently against those with blond hair and blue eyes?

Will they say that the millions of "Modern Warfare" and "World of Warcraft" players should not be considered potential mass murderers?

My guess is no, not a chance.

No way.

Breivik is allegedly a mass murderer, a cold-blooded killer. He allegedly committed heinous acts.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of his victims, and all those affected by the rampage.

Without question, Breivik is to be condemned. This intentional slaughter of innocents is absolutely barbaric. The perpetrator is a monster.

And his profile is what it is.

I just hope that your Mayor Michael Bloomberg types and Leftists in the media emphasize how important it is not to paint blue-eyed (or green-eyed), blond, Christian, conservatives with a broad brush.

Anger over the massacre must not be directed toward blond, blue-eyed conservatives.

Where are the admonitions against profiling the blond and the blue-eyed, the Christian and conservative, the gamers and Winston Churchill admirers?

Norway Attacks (Video)

Yesterday's massacre in Norway is far worse than initially reported.

From the Associated Press:

A Norwegian who dressed as a police officer to gun down summer campers killed at least 80 people at an island retreat, horrified police said early Saturday. It took investigators several hours to begin to realize the full scope of Friday's massacre, which followed an explosion in nearby Oslo that killed seven and that police say was set off by the same suspect.

The mass shootings are among the worst in history. With the blast outside the prime minister's office, they formed the deadliest day of terror in Western Europe since the 2004 Madrid train bombings killed 191.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg told reporters Satyrday that he had spent many summers on the island of Utoya, which was hosting a youth retreat

Utoya is "my childhood paradise that yesterday was transformed into Hell," Stoltenberg said at a news conference in the capital.

Police initially said about 10 were killed at the forested camp on the island, but some survivors said they thought the toll was much higher. Police director Oystein Maeland told reporters early Saturday they had discovered many more victims.

"It's taken time to search the area. What we know now is that we can say that there are at least 80 killed at Utoya," Maeland said. "It goes without saying that this gives dimensions to this incident that are exceptional."

Maeland said the death toll could rise even more. He said others were severely wounded, but police didn't know how many were hurt.

Absolutely horrific.

The death toll continues to rise. It now stands at 91 dead.
